My blog is devoted to ME. Yes Moi! Things I approve/disapprove of in my shopping, traveling, dining, shooting pics, or just walking down the streets of my hood (NYC beybey!). Enjoy!

New Show: Justified

I just finished watching episode 1 of the new FX series Justified (download for free on Itunes).  I'm officially hooked.  Now if I can just remember to watch it on Tuesday nights at 10pm.  I may have to wait until the season is over to Netflix it.

I haven't watched an FX television series since before Nip/Tuck started sucking. I decided to give the show a try because it stars my husband, Timothy Olyphant (better known as Sheriff Seth Bullock from Deadwood) as a U.S. Marshall, with anger issues, ordered to work in his hometown of rural Kentucky.  The show is hardcore.  I stopped counting how many people got shot in the first episode.  Definitely a show to check out.

The Smurfs Movie...

Initially, I was considering shunning this movie, as I have with other 80s remakes (e.g. Miami Vice and the soon due out Karate Kid).  However, it appears they are making ever effort for The Smurfs 3D feature, to not suck!  In theaters in 2011, some of the voice talent includes Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria, Katy Perry, and Alan Cumming.

Mafia!! Movie Ticket Prices Increase Again...

Out of the blue, we find out that ticket prices are set to increase 5% starting...TODAY!!! Thanks for the warning movie theaters.  It looks like the influx of these big budget 3D movies is to blame.  However, if your looking to go see Clash of the Titans on April 2nd, it will cost you almost $20 per person. Those are Mafia prices. Straight up jacking your wallet. Seriously hoping your not looking to buy any snackicakes to munch on during the movie, because a date night may run you $60+ (or you can just stash your purse with goodies from Walgreens and McDonalds like I do).

For my SciFi Geeks....The Dresden Files

Ok, so I may have a slight obsession with Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files.  It all started with the the 2007 SyFy Channel series starring Paul Blackthorne, who I am utterly in love with.  It's about a wizard/detective set in present day Chicago.  It's full of magic, monsters, sex, violence, and a few laughs.  My favorites!  Unfortunately, the series only lasted one season.  In my opinion, it was one of the best series SyFy has ever aired.  I have every single episode on my Ipod, and I can watch them over and over.  You can watch all 12 episodes for free on Hulu

After several Google searches to find out if a there would be a Season 2, and several signed petitions later, I discovered that the television show was actually based on a book series by Jim Butcher (see link above).  From the first book, Storm Front, I was hooked.  It is hands down the best subway reading...EVER.  I find myself talking to the book as if I was at the movies..."oh no he didn't", "look out mofo!", "oh he crazy".  Yes, I have gotten several stares on the train, but I don't care.  I have also spied a couple people who were also reading the series, and we give each other that knowing look that only Dresden-ophiles can understand.  I even got my boyfriend addicted.

Harry Potter is good, but definitely for the kiddies compared to Dresden.

After Dark Horrorfest IV: 8 Films to Die For...

Out on DVD today!

You know I love my horror movies, so I get super excited with the After Dark Horrorfest films come out on DVD. Yeah, 75% of these are probably crap and premiere on the SyFy Channel next year.  I will still add them all to my Netflix queue, and happily watch the crapfest, oops I mean horrorfest, one by one!  There are always one or two gems in the bunch, so it is well worth it.

Say Wha?! Be Bood Johnny Weir on Sundance Channel

I am seriously hating on anyone and everyone who did not tell me about this dude during the Winter Olympics.  I would have been watching the Men's figure skating competition religiously! I am truly upset that I am so late with this.  Be Good Johnny Weir which airs on the Sundance Channel on Mondays at 10:30pm, and actually premiered in January, follows the life of the flaming, Russian loving, cat suit with fur trim wearing, US Olympic Men's Figure skating DIVA, Johnny Weir, on his quest for Olympic Gold.  He is officially my favorite gay of the moment and I will be watching every Monday. WORK!

Eff Twilight!

For you real vampire geeks (like moi)...
Dead and Gone (Sookie Stackhouse Novel #9) comes out in paperback on April 6th! For those of you not in the know, the HBO series True Blood is based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.  However, surprisingly enough, the books have more violence, blood, and sex than HBO!! They are very quick reads, and you can often find the series on sale at Target for less than $6 each.  I have almost missed my subway stop on many occasions reading these juicy stories.  So I say, EFF TWILIGHT with their brooding, sexless vampires!!  Start reading the Sookie Stackhouse today and catch up before the cable starts back up for Season 3 on June 13th (just be forewarned that HBO takes a few liberties with their story lines)!

Movie: Precious

So, I finally mentally prepared myself to watch "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" at around 2am on Sunday morning.  I read the novel a little over 5 years ago, and at the time, I didn't fully know what I was getting into.  For anyone who hasn't read it yet, be forewarned that it is the most difficult read that I have ever encountered.  The abuse is so detailed, that I had to put the book down, several times.  There are very few books that can elicit such an emotional response, that I actually cried.

The movie, to my surprise, and relief, left the explicit details of the abuse to our imagination.  Mo'Nique was definitely the stand out star of the movie.  I can now say that I believe she truly deserved her Academy Award.

Side Note: Mariah Carey, actually did a good job as the social worker, Ms. Weiss.  Who woulda thunk?

Personally, I would say that the movie is not on a level of a "Color Purple", wherein I'd watch it over and over. However, I definitely recommend it if you haven't seen it yet, but read the book first!

The Business...

Yeah so, I'm a cereal eating, cartoon watching, son of a somebody (don't judge me!).  Just wanted to inform you that I tried the Honey Bunches of Oats with Pecans, and it is definitely, THE BUSINESS.  My only complaint is that the oats get soggy fairly quickly, so you have to just eat small bowls,  eat larger bowls really fast with a big spoon, or develop a system like me (less milk, push honey bunches to one side of the bowl, and casually dip into the milk prior to consuming).  Two for $6 at Keyfood this week, Holla!

Nightmare on Elm Street...The Remix

The remake of Nightmare on Elm Street is due in theaters April 30th.  I'm such a huge fan of the franchise, and yet, I still haven't decided whether or not I'm going to shun this Johnny Depp-less updated version of the original.  Thoughts?

TransForm Me

O...M...G! That's Laverne's (the lead tranny) favorite saying, along with other tranny ditties like, "Work", "Diva", and of course, "Fabulous!".  FYI, Laverne is from that horrible Sean Combs show "I want to work for Diddy" that I never watched.  I'm more familiar with her upside down lap dance seen at Lucky Cheng's in NYC.

TransForm Me premiered last night on VH1.  I was so excited!  Essentially, three fabulous transgendered women give makeovers to unassuming real women with low self-esteem (i.e. hot messes).  Last night was a dopey white girl from Mobile, Alabama of all places, who had recently lost 60lbs. She looked like a deer caught in the headlights when three loud trannies rolled up on her door step.

This show has the potential to be one of my top ten reality shows (we all know how I love my queens and trannies).  At times, Laverne turns on the "Tyra" a little too much.  Poor little ugly girl was trying to tell her story, and Laverne kept bringing the conversation back to her struggles as a poor little black boy trapped in a woman's body.  I know this is your show boo boo, but it's not all about you. I will definitely will give it another go.

Snaps for the kids!

Movie: High Tension

Watch online for free @ Fearnet.com.  Lesbian Spanish Language Horror!
High Tension Directors Cut

Movie: Hard Candy

So if you know me, you know that I'm slightly addicted to horror movies.  Hard Candy (2005) stars a young, Ellen Page (Juno) and Patrick Wilson (The Watchmen).  I've heard about this movie for some time, but I'm not quite sure as to why I've avoided it.  Now I know!!!  The first 20 minutes is kind of slow moving and a little difficult to watch. Intense close ups of Patrick Wilson's older character trying and seduce a very young pubescent looking Ellen Page.  I don't want to give away the rest of the movie, but just know that it has a twist like none other, and it quickly picks up the pace.

Definitely an original story (which is not too common in horror flicks these days).  Netflix must see!!

I've never been a huge fan of George Clooney, the movie star. I don't know anyone who wasn't in love with Dr. Ross on E.R.! However on film, he often seems to be playing some version of "George Clooney". The snarky bachelor with the devilish grin. Even as Batman, he was more like George Clooney playing dress up. However, when I watched Up In the Air, Mr. Clooney proved me wrong. O.k., sure, you can say the character is similar to George Clooney in real life, a middle aged bachelor, seemingly with marriage and children no where near the top of his list life goals. But George manages to make you feel the underlying loneliness of his character, Ryan Bingham, and by the end of the movie, he makes you want to reevaluate what is taking priority in your life. Bravo George!

Top Designers for Target

On March 7th, Jean Paul Gaultier joined the long list of top designers (e.g. Anna Sui, Alexander McQueen, Isaac Mizrahi) to make a clothing line available for Target stores, geared toward us"regular working folk". Is it just me or are these clothing lines a joke? Often the pieces are $50+. Is that considered affordable for a regular Target shopper? I also find that the quality is cheap and ill-fitting. If I'm going to spend that kind of money, I'm going to go to Macy's or a department store of the like.

Thoughts?

Dry Skin Solution

THE BODY SHOP'S HEMP HAND PROTECTOR: FOR EXTREMELY DRY SKIN
Whether you have dry winter hands or have a touch of OCD when it comes to hand washing (both in my case), you may want to check this product out. I picked this up from The Body Shop at 54th and Lex last month. It works best if applied right after you wash your hands, when they are still moist. My hands have been soft and ash-less ever since!

Bonus: It works and is on sale right now for $10 (re. $18.50)
Negatives: smells a little like ass.

Say Wha?! Product of the Week

Bleh! WTF Orbit? You tricked me with your funny commercials and your "a hydrating sensation with micro-bursts" tagline. The "hydrating sensation" is actually your mouth crying for help. If you're a fan of sour candy (lemonheads, sour patch kids, etc.), you'll enjoy the initial burst of flavor. However, less than a minute later, all of the flavor is gone! But that isn't even the worst part. The gum turns into this mushy/gizzy consistency that just makes you want to spit it out immediately. Good thing I bought it on sale. FAIL!
